Le terroir

Located on the Eastern tip of the Baux valley, sheltered in an unspoiled little dale, the Domaine de Lauzières is an old Huguenot hideout with which Jean-Daniel Schlaepfer quite simply fell in love.
Before discovering Lauzières, before even becoming a wine-maker, Jean-Daniel was a business lawyer in Switzerland. At the age of 35, he left the Bar for the barrel. With his friend Gérard Pillon as partner, he created the Domaine des Balisiers in the Mandement district of the Geneva region. Today, he and Gérard divide their time between two countries and two wine estates.

A cultured man, who has read everything from Pliny the Elder to Emile Peynaud, the forefather of modern oenology, Dan never tires of learning or experimenting. His latest discovery: egg-shaped amphorae molded out of a mixture of clay and concrete, which he fills with his wine, letting natural energies go to work.

At Domaine de Lauzières, everything, from the grapevines – grown according to biodynamic principles – to the cellar -- built using the Golden Ratio – every choice is made for a reason.
So when he finds it necessary, Dan Schlaepfer does not hesitate to step outside the appellation boundaries. As, for example, when he decided to follow the advice of Alain Carbonneau, a professor with the French National Institute of Agricultural Research, to plant some Petit Verdot (a grape variety not allowed in the appellation) and to train the vines in an open-lyre shape, an experimental trellising system that uses the sun to optimize potential aromas…

The cuvee produced by the bold blending of Petit Verdot with Grenache is called Sine Nomine. Falling outside the rules as it does, it is classified as “table wine” and cannot display its vintage. Undaunted, Dan Schlaepfer gave it a special lot number, using a secret algorithm that divulges, without stating it explicitly, the birth date of the wine.

To the East of the Alpilles mountains, 6 km from the village of Mouriès, in the place known as Le Destet, this 75-acre vineyard is completely dedicated to the principles and practices of biodynamics. It is planted with Grenache (46%), Petit Verdot (28%), Syrah (12%), Mourvèdre (8%), Cinsault, Carignan and Counoise.

- Solstice, Les Baux AOC red wine, a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
- Equinoxe, Les Baux AOC wine, combining Grenache, Cinsault and Carignan.
- Sine Nomine, a table wine blending Petit Verdot and Grenache.
- Astérie is a white wine composed of white Grenache and Clairette. Also classified as a table wine, this blend is numbered according to the Hebrew calendar.
